The roof-sealing ceremony of the SSIJRI headquarters building was held on the morning of June 24th 2020. Prof. Zhu Min, Co-chair of SSIJRI Governing Council and Vice President of SCUT, Mr. Chen Changxin, Party Secretary and President of Knowledge City (Guangzhou) Investment Group, and CEO of GKC Investment & Development Co (GKC Co), Mr. Xu Hui, Member of SSIJRI Governing Council and Vice Director-General of CSGKC Development & Construction Office, Mr. Ang Boon Peng, Member of SSIJRI Governing Council and Senior Vice President (Strategic Collaboration) of GKC Co, Professor Yu Long, Executive Director of SSIJRI, Mr. Zhang Jun, Vice Party Secretary and General Manager of China Construction Railway Investment Rail Transit Construction Co., Ltd, and management of other participating units attended the ceremony. Professor Lam Khin Yong, Co-chair of SSIJRI Governing Council and Senior Vice President (Research) of NTU Singapore, extended his congratulations from Singapore on the successful completion of the main building structure through a congratulatory video.
In his speech at the event, Prof Zhu Min congratulated the roof sealing of the new building on behalf of SCUT. As one of the forerunners in the reform of technological transformation system, Prof Zhu said SCUT operates on the idea of “be part of the development to promote development”, and actively involves in the social and economic development of the nation and the region. SSIJRI is an important platform for the university to carry out high-level international technological transfers, and since its establishment, the institute has received tremendous care and support from governments and organisations. Prof Zhu thanked the GKC Co, government officials and people of all sectors for their care and support. He also expressed his gratitude towards the workers for their contribution in building the SSIJRI headquarters.
NTU Senior Vice President (Research) Lam Khin Yong spoke about the support SSIJRI received from the local government that has helped the institute in becoming a great platform for researchers from top universities world-wide to work closely with industry partners and translate world-class research into innovation and solutions that can add value to the transformation of the traditional manufacturing industry. The academia-industry-government collaboration model adopted by SSIJRI has made it a successful example and an integral part of the healthy ecosystem and competitive economy in GKC. It was a great pleasure for him to witness the successful roof sealing of SSIJRI Headquarters Building, as it indicates that the institute is one step closer to the scaled-up development in the next phase.
About the new buildings of SSIJRI
Both SSIJRI buildings are located at the centre of the China-Singapore International Smart Park in the GKC South Start-up region. With a total building area of 50,000m2, these buildings are designed to accommodate research and office use.
China-Singapore International Smart Park is funded, developed and managed by GKC Co. It is located at the centre of the GKC South Start-up region with a total construction area of 17,7800m2 and a total investment of 1.4billion RMB.
With guidance and strong support from the Guangzhou municipal government, especially officials of the Guangzhou Development District, and resources provided by the four-party Governing Council, the main structure of the SSIJRI Headquarters building is now complete. Since the inception of SSIJRI, the institute has been focusing on scientific innovations and technological transfers. So far, the institute has published more than 80 research papers, among which 70 are published on SCI journals; applied for over 40 patents, in leading position of similar institutions; secured funding for 17 Guangdong province key research projects, incubated and incubated more than 20 hi-tech start-up companies.
The construction of the new building is a key milestone in the development of SSIJRI. The institute will tap into the opportunity to further its collaboration in technology transfer between China and Singapore as well as within the regions.With the innovation model of “Openness, Diversity, Dynamic, Efficiency”, SSIJRI will increase its support in technological innovations and work towards a higher level of international research and technological transfer platform to contribute the innovation-driven development of Guangdong province and the Greater Bay Area.
